Shin Suzuma is a London-based pianist and composer, creating music with an imaginative interplay between neo-classical, improvisation, and cinematic composition.
On November 7, Shin releases Dawn Chorus, his debut album of solo piano music, on the label Platoon. The LP promises a journey inspired by his travels, but etched with his signature compositional style of intimate music, combining the depth of nostalgia, artistry, and hope.
In his words:
“Composed in-between my travels to Japan, Brazil and Europe, these pieces are inspired by nature and being outdoors in new places that affected me more profoundly than ever before. With Dawn Chorus, I wanted to rekindle this meditative reflection on natural surroundings and share the feelings of what day and night awaken within us.”
His compositions are mostly written for solo piano and performed in such a way as to create a sense of intimacy and calm, balanced with works of a more playful and uplifting nature. Shin's music occasionally touches upon melancholy but always carries a prevailing sense of hope and gentle optimism.
Being of British and Japanese heritage, his inspirations include the Japanese artists Ryuichi Sakamoto and Joe Hisaishi. But it was the harmonically rich writing of Chilly Gonzales and Nils Frahm that inspired him to develop his long-held love of improvisation into composition and live performance.
Released by the UK label Platoon, Shin Suzuma's past solo piano EPs Introspect and Silhouettes have amassed millions of streams worldwide and are regularly featured on Apple Music playlists such as Neo-Classical, Piano Sleep, and Piano Chill, as well as Spotify’s Peaceful Piano playlist.
Shin's music offers audiences a welcome moment of serenity—granting space for reflection while guiding them along a playfully heartfelt musical journey.
Paired with artwork and animations carefully hand-painted by LA-based animator Josh Shaffner, the album holds the essence of scenes captured in the music, framed with beautiful artistry from their collaboration. Highlighting each single with distinct artwork—Intermezzo, Daylight Prelude, and Garden Rain—the visuals bring a refreshing aesthetic to expressive neo-classical music.
A debut to be discovered and cherished, Dawn Chorus by Shin Suzuma is out November 7 on Platoon.
